By height

When working at height, it’s important to consider that you have the perfect ladder height for your project's needs. A successful project starts with a secure foundation and a secure base. If your ladder is too short, you should never over reach as this can cause the ladder to become unstable.

As a general rule, to calculate the maximum reach for any ladder, calculate the ladder’s height, plus 4ft. For example, the maximum height for a 8ft ladder would be 12ft.

At TW Wholesale we have a variety of Werner ladders to suit any project height. For low reach tasks, consider a range of step ladders, varying from 2 to 12 steps. For projects that require moderate height to reach ceilings, opt for multi-purpose ladders. For the maximum height, an extension ladder is the ideal choice. Remember to always ensure your base is secure before using any ladder.

By application

When selecting which ladders you need, the most common consideration is knowing which ladders you need for the job. Ladders are classified into three categories – Class 1 (highest max load of 175kg), Class 2 (mid-range load of 150kg) and Class 3 (lowest max load of 125kg). Whilst the list below is only a general guide to choosing the right ladders for the job, you should also consider that the ladders are the adequate classification for the weight of the load (this includes the weight of the person, tools and materials).

  • Electricity - always use fibreglass ladders for electrical work. Commercial, multi-purpose and step ladders are usually adequate for day-to-day electrical jobs.
  • Building - sturdy aluminium or fibreglass. For heavier loads, consider Class 1 ladders.
  • Painting & decorating - lightweight aluminium multi-purpose or platform step ladders, ideal for both DIY and trade professionals.
  • Roofing - commercial, aluminium or fibreglass extension ladders.
  • Loft ladders - lightweight aluminium extension ladders, ideal for both DIY and trade professionals.

By material

There are two main ladder materials that you will find – fibreglass and aluminium.

As previously mentioned, fibreglass ladders are the only ladders that you should be using when working with any electrical work. Although these ladders are generally more expensive, they are extremely sturdy and will suit a variety of trade applications.

For jobs that require a lot of movement, such as painting & decorating, consider lightweight aluminium ladders. Ideal for most jobs, aluminium ladders are amongst the most cost effective quality ladders on the market.
